Installing a wallbox: what you need to know

A wallbox charges your electric car much faster than a conventional household socket. In Austria, it must legally be installed by a licensed electrical contractor. Installing it yourself is dangerous and also invalidates your warranty, subsidy entitlement and insurance cover.

11 kW or 22 kW?

An 11 kW wallbox is sufficient for most private households in Austria. At 11 kW, an average electric car can be fully charged in four to six hours. A 22 kW wallbox requires a separate grid assessment by the grid operator and makes no practical difference in everyday use for most homes. Our team will advise you on site on the right power rating for your vehicle and your home's grid connection.

Registration with the grid operator

In Austria, wallboxes with a charging capacity above 3.7 kW must be registered with the relevant grid operator before installation. We handle this registration for you and coordinate all the necessary steps through to commissioning.

Locations and installation requirements

Whether in a garage, under a carport or on an outside wall, we check before installation whether your existing metering system and circuit protection can support the additional load. If adjustments are needed, we clarify them with the grid operator and carry out all the necessary work in one go.

Electrical installations for renewable energy

Photovoltaic systems, battery storage, heat pumps and charging stations place different demands on a building's electrical installation than conventional household electricity use. Conversio Energie carries out all the electrical installation work your energy solution requires.

This includes wiring between the inverter, storage system and meter cabinet, installing protective devices such as isolators and surge protection, adapting the meter cabinet and establishing the grid connection for electricity fed into the grid. All work is performed by licensed electricians and completed with the required inspection report.

Wallbox and photovoltaics from one provider

If you have a photovoltaic system, you can power your wallbox directly with solar electricity from your own roof. This significantly reduces charging costs because surplus solar power that would otherwise be fed into the grid goes straight into your vehicle.

This application requires coordinated planning of the PV system, inverter and charging station. As Conversio Energie offers both from one provider, the PV system and wallbox are designed to work together from the outset. A separate electrician cannot provide this integration.

For existing customers who already have a photovoltaic system, we assess whether and how a wallbox can be added.

Charging station subsidies in Austria

Federal subsidies of up to EUR 600 are available in Austria for installing a private wallbox. In apartment buildings, grants of up to EUR 900 are available for individual installations and up to EUR 1,800 for shared installations. Funding is limited to 50 percent of purchase and installation costs.

Individual federal states also offer their own funding programmes. During your initial consultation, our team will explain which subsidies are currently available for your location and circumstances and help you with the application.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to install a wallbox?

Installing the wallbox itself usually takes three to five hours. If the meter cabinet needs adjustments or new cable routes are required, the work may take longer. After an on-site inspection, we can give you a reliable timeframe.

How much does a wallbox installation cost in Austria?

The total cost of the unit and professional installation in Austria is typically between EUR 1,000 and EUR 4,000, depending on the device, installation work and structural conditions. After an on-site check, we provide a transparent quote with no hidden costs.

Can I install the wallbox myself?

No. In Austria, wallboxes may only be installed by licensed electrical contractors. Installing one yourself is not legally permitted and invalidates the warranty, subsidy entitlement and insurance cover.

Will the wallbox work with my existing PV system?

Yes, in most cases. Whether and how your existing solar system can be combined with a wallbox depends on the inverter and the existing installation. We check this during the consultation and plan the integration to meet the technical requirements.

Do I need a permit for the wallbox?

In Austria, wallboxes with a charging capacity above 3.7 kW must be registered with the relevant grid operator before installation. We handle this registration for you.
