Grid infrastructure components

Renewable energy systems generate electricity. To feed that electricity into the grid, distribute it or store it, high-performance electrical infrastructure is essential: transformer substations, switchgear, power distribution and control systems.

Conversio Energie designs, manufactures, installs and maintains these components for projects of different sizes, from a photovoltaic system on a detached house to a wind farm or large-scale storage facility.

Transformer substation and switchgear for a photovoltaic grid connection

What we supply

Transformer substations

Compact and walk-in transformer substations for connecting large PV installations, battery storage and small hydropower plants to the medium-voltage grid. Designed to meet the requirements of the relevant grid operator.

Switchgear

Type-tested and non-type-tested medium- and low-voltage switchgear. Design, manufacture and installation in accordance with IEC, DIN VDE and ÖNORM.

Power distribution

Main and sub-distribution boards, busbar systems and cable infrastructure for industrial and commercial energy projects. Sized according to load profile and feed-in capacity.

Energy control

Metering, protection and control technology for monitoring and managing energy systems. Integration with existing control systems and remote monitoring.

Which projects we support

Grid infrastructure components are used wherever generated energy needs to be fed into the public grid, distributed within a site or managed between producers and consumers.

Large-scale photovoltaic installations

PV systems of around 100 kWp and above generally require their own transformer substation for a medium-voltage connection. Conversio supplies the complete grid connection, from the inverter output to the grid connection point.

Battery storage

Commercial and large-scale storage systems place special demands on grid infrastructure: bidirectional power flows, fast switching and precise control. The switchgear must be designed to meet these requirements.

Small hydropower plants

Connecting small hydropower plants to the medium-voltage grid requires a transformer substation matched to the generator output, along with the appropriate protection and metering equipment.

Commerce and industry

Manufacturing businesses with high self-consumption and their own generation need power distribution that reliably coordinates generation input, self-consumption and feed-in to the grid.

From planning to commissioning

Every grid infrastructure project begins with coordination with the relevant grid operator. Conversio handles the technical design, clarifies connection requirements and agrees the technical parameters with the grid operator.

Switchgear and transformer substations are manufactured at the factory. On-site installation is followed by electrical testing, commissioning and handover to the grid operator.

Frequently asked questions about grid infrastructure components

When do I need my own transformer substation?

Generally, from a photovoltaic feed-in capacity of around 100 kWp, or a comparable capacity for small hydropower. The relevant grid operator specifies the exact connection requirements. Conversio clarifies in advance whether a transformer substation is necessary and, if so, plans it as part of the overall project.

What is the difference between type-tested and non-type-tested switchgear?

Type-tested switchgear (under IEC 61439) has undergone full design testing in an independent laboratory. Non-type-tested assemblies are verified through calculations and individual supporting evidence. The option used depends on the requirements of the project and the grid operator.

Can Conversio handle the entire grid connection for my PV project?

Yes. Conversio supplies the photovoltaic system, electricity storage and grid infrastructure from one provider. This includes planning, construction of the transformer substation, switchgear, grid connection and commissioning. It avoids coordination problems between different trades.
